Black Vinyl LP

This is the 2016 US vinyl reissue of Dead Letter Office on I.R.S. Records, catalog number B0024995-01: a single black LP with the original 15-song vinyl sequence. The CD issue appended the five songs of the 1982 Chronic Town EP; this LP leaves them off. The two sides keep the original sleeve's names, Post Side and Script Side.

I.R.S. first released the collection in April 1987. It gathers outtakes and B-sides from the stretch between Murmur and Lifes Rich Pageant, recorded from 1981 to 1986 with Mitch Easter, Don Dixon, Joe Boyd and Don Gehman producing. Peter Buck wrote track-by-track liner notes and admitted the band might be seen as "trying to cash in, maybe to sell some records." Several tracks are marked in those notes as not produced at all, recorded live to two-track.

Six of the fifteen are covers: three Lou Reed songs from the Velvet Underground, "There She Goes Again," "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Femme Fatale," along with Aerosmith's "Toys In The Attic," Pylon's "Crazy" and Roger Miller's "King Of The Road." "White Tornado" was cut in 1981 on the same day as the "Radio Free Europe" single, while "Walters Theme" and "King Of The Road" came at the end of a 1983 tryout session with Elliot Mazer. "Voice Of Harold" is built on the backing track of "7 Chinese Bros." from Reckoning, and "Windout" first appeared on the Bachelor Party soundtrack. The album reached No. 52 on the Billboard 200 and No. 60 in the UK, and "Ages Of You" made No. 39 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
