180 Gram Vinyl, 2015 Paisley Park Remaster

Warner Bros. Records issued Purple Rain on June 25, 1984. It was the sixth Prince album and the first credited to Prince and the Revolution, and it carried the soundtrack to the film of the same name. The record held number one on the Billboard 200 for twenty-four consecutive weeks, from August 4, 1984 to January 18, 1985, and was present on that chart for 167 weeks in all. "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" each reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and the title track and "I Would Die 4 U" both landed in the top ten. By 1996 the album had sold thirteen million copies in the United States and the RIAA had certified it thirteen times platinum.

It won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, was nominated for Album of the Year, and took the 1985 Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. It has since been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. Complaints about "Darling Nikki" from Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center contributed to the introduction of Parental Advisory stickers on album covers.

Prince is credited with the words and music on eight of the nine songs. Six tracks credit Prince and the Revolution as performer, producer and arranger; "The Beautiful Ones," "Darling Nikki" and "When Doves Cry" credit Prince alone. Apollonia takes the duet vocal on "Take Me With U." "Computer Blue" is written by Prince with Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and John L. Nelson, Prince's father.

This is the 2017 reissue, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and carrying the 2015 Paisley Park remaster. The hype sticker on the shrink credits that remaster to Prince and carries the catalog number 1-547450. Bernie Grundman mastered the 1984 original. The jacket reproduces the original 1984 packaging and restores the pull-out poster, which pressings had gone without for years.
