Funky Stuff is the 1975 album by Soul Media, the Japanese jazz-rock unit led by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki. Inagaki has said he "played black funk" on this record: the group's explosive jazz-rock foundation is fused with the stickiness, elasticity, and physicality of black music, polished to a high sheen by the arrangements of Hiromasa Suzuki. Alongside the driving "Painted Paradise" and the mellow "Breeze," the set carries a low-slung, razor-sharp cover of Kool & The Gang's "Funky Stuff." The album is now regarded as a definitive Japanese jazz-funk classic and remains in constant demand from listeners around the world.
