All was the Descendents' fourth album, recorded in January 1987 at Radio Tokyo in Venice and released that June on SST. It was the first to feature bassist Karl Alvarez and guitarist Stephen Egerton, who pushed the band's pop-punk past into stranger, more melodic territory, and it was produced by drummer Bill Stevenson, with Dez Cadena of Black Flag on backing vocals. The title comes from Stevenson's own "All" philosophy — the idea of going for the total extent rather than settling for some — stated outright in the seconds-long title track and "All-O-Gistics." It closed the band's original run: not long after, Milo Aukerman left to pursue biochemistry and the group carried on under the name All.
