Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack pioneered socially aware soul in the early 1970s. Released in July 1972, it famously outperformed the film, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart and eventually selling over 12 million copies worldwide, anchored by the gold-certified, million-selling singles "Freddie's Dead" and "Superfly." Where other soundtracks of the era glamorized street life, Mayfield delivered a searing critique of systemic poverty and drug abuse; the album was cut in an intensive three-day session at RCA Studios in Chicago, except for "Pusherman," recorded earlier in New York City.

This brick and mortar exclusive edition in Rhino's High Fidelity series is a limited numbered pressing: AAA cut from the original stereo master tapes by Kevin Gray, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal, in a heavyweight glossy tip-on gatefold jacket with an exclusive insert featuring liner notes by Aaron Cohen.
