Domino's reissue of The Marble Index returned the album to vinyl on March 29, 2024, after years out of print. The audio was mastered from the original tapes by Barry Grint, and the package adds photographs of Nico by Guy Webster that had not been published before, along with a download code.
Elektra first released the album in November 1968. Jac Holzman agreed to make it after Nico played him the songs on her harmonium in his Broadway office, and he gave her a $10,000 budget and a four-day schedule at a studio on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles. Frazier Mohawk is credited as producer; John Cale arranged and mixed the record, building each track outward from her voice and the harmonium.
Nico wrote all eight songs. She took the title from Wordsworth's The Prelude, in which a statue of Isaac Newton is "the marble index of a mind for ever / Voyaging through strange seas of Thought, alone." Four more songs from the sessions were left off, and the finished album runs barely half an hour.
Evergreen Vinyl ships records with care and attention to detail, using established carriers and packaging practices designed to protect physical media in transit.
