12-Inch Vinyl Single

Wonderwheel Recordings' 12-inch of La Conga Vieja, catalog number WONDER295, carries four tracks. Side A holds the full version of the title track and "Santa Conga Vieja," a separate piece by Gabriele Poso; side B holds the radio edit and its instrumental. The sleeve design is by Pablo E. Yglesias of Peace & Rhythm.

The song began on a trip to Puerto Rico, by the label's account. Nickodemus and Poso arrived for a show with no congas, and a promoter brought an old drum that had belonged to his father, old enough that nobody was sure it would play. The crowd started chanting "La Conga Vieja" and pushed Poso to try it, and the set ended on that groove. Nickodemus then invited poet Flaco Navaja and Cuban trumpeter Carlos Sarduy to turn the story into a dance track, one the label describes as being about resilience, migration and memory. Wonderwheel's notes place it in the line of "Mi Swing Es Tropical," Nickodemus's earlier collaboration with Quantic and Tempo: a 4/4 groove built on Afro-Latin percussion, salsa piano and horns.

The sleeve credits production to Nickodemus and Poso, vocals to Navaja and Poso, trumpet and piano to Sarduy, and percussion to Poso. Nickodemus arranged and mixed the title track, and Ron A. Shaffer mastered the record at Atlantic Studios West. "Santa Conga Vieja" is Poso's alone: he wrote and produced it and performed every instrument and vocal, and Francesco Bove mixed it.

Nickodemus is a New York DJ and producer who started DJing and throwing parties at 14, ran the Turntables on the Hudson parties from the early 2000s, and runs Wonderwheel as his own label. Poso, born in Sardinia in 1978 and raised in Lecce, began studying Afro-Cuban percussion in Rome in 1998 and moved to Puerto Rico in 2001 to continue those studies.
