180 Gram Black Vinyl LP, Remastered Reissue

This is the 2014 US issue of Kicking Against The Pricks from Mute and BMG, catalog number BMG14003V: a single LP on 180-gram black vinyl, packed with a printed inner sleeve and a digital download card. It arrived in the first round of the 2014-2015 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds vinyl reissues, a round made up of the band's first four albums: From Her To Eternity, The Firstborn Is Dead, Kicking Against The Pricks and Your Funeral... My Trial.

The campaign followed BMG's 2013 acquisition of the band's Mute catalogue and brought fourteen of their albums to heavyweight vinyl for the first time. Former Bad Seed Mick Harvey oversaw the remastering, and the artwork follows the original release from the front cover through to the printed inner sleeve.

First released by Mute on 18 August 1986, the band's third studio album is made up of cover versions, reaching from John Lee Hooker's "I'm Gonna Kill That Woman" and Jimmy Webb's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" to the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties." Cave has said the songs were chosen for different reasons: some as tributes, some because he felt they had never been done particularly well, and some, like "The Carnival Is Over," because they had haunted his childhood. "Sleeping Annaleah" is the song Tom Jones recorded as "Weeping Annaleah."

It was the first Bad Seeds album with drummer Thomas Wydler, playing alongside Cave, Blixa Bargeld, Barry Adamson and Mick Harvey. The backing tracks were engineered at AAV Studios in Melbourne in November and December 1985 and mixed at Hansa Tonstudios in Berlin in March 1986. Harvey arranged the strings, which were played by the Berliner Kaffeehausmusik Ensemble. "The Singer" was issued as a single on 16 June 1986, and the album reached number 89 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the UK Independent chart.
