Merge Records' single LP of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, catalog number MRG136LP, in print on vinyl since 2009. It comes with an artwork insert carrying the lyrics and credits. Merge's store notes that Magnet Magazine named it the best album of the 1990s.
Neutral Milk Hotel's second and final studio album was recorded from July to September 1997 at Pet Sounds Studio. Producer Robert Schneider worked with bandleader Jeff Mangum on a cleaner sound than the band's debut, On Avery Island, using heavy compression rather than effects units to get the distortion on the record. Singing saw and uilleann pipes sit alongside guitar and drums, and Anne Frank's diary was a major influence on the lyrics.
Merge released the album on February 10, 1998. Initial reviews were moderately positive, and its standing rose over the following years as it gathered a cult following.
