180 Gram Black Vinyl 2LP

This is the standard black vinyl edition of Consentrik Quartet: two 180-gram LPs carrying the album's 12 tracks over four sides. The vinyl was mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in Nashville, and his initials and the studio's name are etched in the runout of each side. Blue Note issued the album on this black vinyl, on a color vinyl sold only through the Blue Note Store, and on CD and download.

Consentrik Quartet is the first album by Nels Cline's band of the same name: Ingrid Laubrock on saxophones, Chris Lightcap on bass and Tom Rainey on drums. Cline wrote all 12 pieces and produced the record. It is his fourth album for Blue Note, following Lovers and Share the Wealth, the second of those made with his long-running group the Nels Cline Singers. Cline has played guitar in Wilco since 2004. He describes the new band as "much more of a jazz group, if I dare use that word."

The band first played together at a free-improvisation set at The Stone, John Zorn's venue, at its Brooklyn outpost. A commission and grant from the Philadelphia organization Ars Nova Workshop followed, to write new music and tour it in the eastern US. Then the pandemic arrived, and Cline estimates he wrote half the material during lockdown, first in Brooklyn and then in rural upstate New York. The quartet recorded it at The Bunker in Brooklyn in February and July 2024. In its announcement, Blue Note pointed to the John Scofield and Joe Lovano quartets, the Jimmy Giuffre 3, and 1960s Blue Note records by Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy as reference points. "The 23," which the label describes as a hard-driving piece with a hypnotic groove, came out as the lead single in January 2025.
