Definitive Sound Series One-Step 180g LP, Limited to 3,000 Numbered Copies

This is the Definitive Sound Series One-Step edition of Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song, cut from the original half-inch three-track analog tapes. Chris Bellman mastered it at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Dorin Sauerbier handled the One-Step plating at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI), which pressed the record on Neotech VR900-D2 180-gram high-definition vinyl. Capitol's notes say the tapes were assembled from multiple reels and spliced to match the 1962 running order, with two bonus tracks added.

The run is a one-time pressing of 3,000 numbered copies, each with a certificate of authenticity. The disc sits in an RTI anti-static inner sleeve inside a heavyweight tip-on gatefold jacket, and the jacket slides into a custom open-ended slipcase printed with the cover art, the track listing and the One-Step production credits. Both runouts are hand-etched.

The album began as The Magic of Christmas, Cole's only full-length Christmas record, cut over three days in July 1960 at Capitol Tower Studio A with Ralph Carmichael arranging and conducting, Milt Raskin on piano, John Collins on guitar and Lee Young on drums. Capitol retitled it The Christmas Song in 1962. That edition opened with the 1961 re-recording of the title song, first issued on The Nat King Cole Story, and dropped "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen". It went to No. 1 on Billboard's Christmas Albums chart, and the RIAA has certified the album for six million US shipments. Here "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" closes side A. Goldmine counts more than 250 reissues of the album and notes that none before this one was a premium audiophile edition.
