Chess Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This LP is part of Chess Records' Acoustic Sounds Series, the label's 75th-anniversary audiophile reissue program. Every title in the series is mastered by Matthew Lutthans from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP). This one is a single black disc in a gatefold jacket. The front reproduces the original Chess LP 1444 cover, two black-and-white photographs of Waters fill the inner spread, and the center label follows the old Chess Recording Corp. design.

Muddy Waters cut these ten songs in Chicago between June and August 1959, and Chess issued the album in June 1960. It was his first studio album; his only earlier LP, The Best of Muddy Waters (1958), collected singles. The material comes from Big Bill Broonzy, the bluesman who helped Waters get started in Chicago, and the band recasts it in Waters' electric Chicago style. Otis Spann plays piano, James Cotton harmonica, Pat Hare guitar and Andrew Stephenson bass.

In his AllMusic review, Cub Koda notes that this was apparently the first time Waters and his band were recorded in stereo, and he singles out Cotton's harmonica. Pete Welding gave the album four stars in DownBeat. Waters' other titles in the series include The Best of Muddy Waters, Folk Singer, The Real Folk Blues, Muddy, Brass and the Blues and At Newport 1960.
