9LP Box Set On Black Vinyl With 60-Page Book

Nine black LPs, each in its own full-color jacket, inside a deluxe outer box, issued by Columbia and Legacy in the centennial year of both Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound cut the records directly from the original analog tapes, working from the audio Mark Wilder remixed and remastered for the set's first edition in 2000. The 60-page book adapts the original box set's book: rare photographs, texts by producer George Avakian and drummer Jimmy Cobb, Bob Blumenthal's liner notes, a timeline, notes by Michael Cuscuna and Bob Belden, and Bill Evans's original liner notes for Kind of Blue.

Cuscuna and Belden first assembled the collection in 2000 as a six-CD set, released by Columbia/Legacy on April 11 of that year. It won two Grammy Awards, for its packaging and for Blumenthal's notes. Its only previous vinyl edition was a limited, numbered nine-LP set from Mosaic Records, which Legacy describes as a super limited edition; this is the first time the vinyl version has been widely available.

The 58 tracks gather everything Davis recorded for Columbia with Coltrane in his band, from October 26, 1955 to March 21, 1961: the albums 'Round About Midnight, Milestones and Kind of Blue in full, two tracks from Someday My Prince Will Come, the Davis A-side of Miles & Monk at Newport, and Jazz at the Plaza, along with the Davis-Coltrane selections that surfaced on Basic Miles and Circle in the Round. Eighteen tracks were unreleased before 2000, including alternate takes of "Two Bass Hit," "Bye Bye Blackbird," "Milestones" and "Flamenco Sketches," a false start of "Freddie Freeloader," and a false start of "Sweet Sue, Just You" carrying a discussion between Davis and Leonard Bernstein.

The band around Davis and Coltrane changed over the six years: Cannonball Adderley on alto saxophone; Red Garland, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly on piano; Paul Chambers on bass throughout; and Philly Joe Jones and then Jimmy Cobb on drums. Hank Mobley joins on tenor saxophone for "Someday My Prince Will Come." Everything was recorded in New York City except the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival set, which opens with an introduction by Willis Conover.
