Boner Records reissued Bullhead on black vinyl in 2018 with updated cover artwork and a new gatefold sleeve, keeping the original catalog number, BR25-1. The eight songs sit four to a side.
The album was the Melvins' third, released by Boner in January 1991. Buzz Osborne wrote every song and plays guitar and sings, with Lori Black on bass and Dale Crover on drums; Jonathan Burnside produced and engineered it. "Your Blessened" had been released as a single the year before.
The songs are longer and slower than on the band's earlier records, starting with the eight-and-a-half-minute "Boris," the track the Japanese band Boris took its name from. In 2017 Rolling Stone ranked Bullhead No. 60 among the 100 greatest metal albums, describing it as the record that announced the Melvins as a metal band. "It's Shoved," the side A closer, is shown above in a live performance from Irving Plaza.
