Digipak CD

Loma Vista put Marrow Deep out on a single compact disc in a digipak, catalog LVR05575, printed around the face of the disc. Copies from the initial run carry one of three circular stickers, inserted at random; each reproduces one of the three figures standing across the front of the sleeve. All twelve songs fit the one disc, sixty-five and a half minutes end to end.

The sleeve art and art direction are credited to Paul Romano. The three figures on it hold a spindle, a thread and a pair of shears: Loma Vista's announcement names the Three Fates of Greek mythology as the album's starting point, and the record closes on a song called "The Three Fates."

Marrow Deep is Mastodon's ninth studio album and the first the band has made for Loma Vista. It was recorded at West End Sound, the studio the band owns in Atlanta, with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou producing alongside the group and Andrew Scheps mixing. Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher are joined by Nick Johnston on guitar and João Nogueira on keyboards.

The guest list runs through most of the record. Josh Homme sings on "Snakes for Dinner." Randy Blythe of Lamb of God and Nate Newton of Converge sing on "A Vampire's Demeanor," and Ben Koller, also of Converge, plays percussion on "Barbarians Blood." Geezer Butler plays the bass introduction to "The Vanishing," which carries a vocal from Joe Duplantier of Gojira, and Neil Fallon of Clutch speaks on the closing track.

Hushed and Grim, in 2021, was the last Mastodon album to feature founding guitarist Brent Hinds; he is not on this one. A week before Marrow Deep was announced the band released The Mastodon in the Room, a short film about his loss, and the label describes the album that followed as the start of a new chapter rather than an ending.
