180g Black Vinyl LP Reissue

This is the 2016 Virgin reissue of Blue Lines as a single 180-gram black LP, catalog number 5700960. It comes with a printed inner sleeve, and the center labels carry the Wild Bunch imprint the group first released the album on. The nine songs are cut five to side A and four to side B, with "Unfinished Sympathy" opening the second side.

Blue Lines was Massive Attack's debut studio album, first issued on April 8, 1991 by Wild Bunch and Virgin. Robert "3D" Del Naja, Grantley "Daddy G" Marshall, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Adrian "Tricky" Thaws led the recording, with Jonny Dollar as co-writer and co-producer and vocals from Shara Nelson and Horace Andy. It sets hip-hop's breakbeats, sampling and rapping against dub, 1970s soul, reggae and electronic music; AllMusic's John Bush called it the "first masterpiece" of what came to be known as trip hop, a term that was not in wide use until 1994.

Del Naja has said the group spent about eight months on the album, working from ideas as much as seven years old. "Safe From Harm" and "Lately" dated back to the Wild Bunch and the Bristol sound systems, while "Five Man Army" came together as a jam. Daddy G has credited Neneh Cherry with getting the group into the studio, and much of the album was recorded at her house.

"Unfinished Sympathy" came out in February 1991 as the album's second single, credited to "Massive". The shortened name kept the record clear of a radio ban during the Gulf War. The album reached number 13 on the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for Best British Album at the 1992 Brit Awards. Rolling Stone has included it on each edition of its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list since 2003. The cover lettering is set in Helvetica Black Oblique, and Del Naja has acknowledged that the Stiff Little Fingers logo on Inflammable Material influenced the design.
