Clear Lime Yellow, Red & Blue 180g Vinyl 3LP With Photo Booklet

This 3LP set, catalog number UPJY-9567/9, is the first-press limited vinyl edition of Rainbow Goblins Story: Live at Budokan 1981, issued by Universal Music Japan for the concert's 45th anniversary. The three 180-gram records are pressed in clear red, clear lime yellow and clear blue; the label ties the colors to the three primary colors of light and to the rainbow-finished Yamaha SG Takanaka played that night. The middle record is single-sided, its fourth side carrying an etched design instead of music.

The set includes a booklet of stage photographs and a reproduction of the original The Rainbow Goblins poster. Alex Wharton mastered the audio and cut the lacquers at Abbey Road Studios in London. Liner notes are by music writer Masayoshi Kondo and Yoshinobu Maruyama, Takanaka's manager at Kitty Artists at the time.

The concert ran over two nights at Nippon Budokan, March 10 and 11, 1981: the release day of The Rainbow Goblins and the day after. The first half staged that album, Takanaka's concept record inspired by Ul de Rico's picture book, in full; the second half turned to his best-known songs. The label states this is the first time the full performance has been released as a single audio work.

According to the label, a rainbow neon arch spanned the stage, lit in sequence with the music alongside a laser show, and the seven supporting musicians wore costumes in goblin colors while Takanaka played in a yellow jumpsuit. The band was Masahiro Miyazaki on drums, Akihiro Tanaka on bass, Izumi Kobayashi and Kiyosumi Ishikawa on keyboards, Yuki Sugawara and Makoto Kimura on percussion and Koji Satsuma on saxophone, with narration by Roy Garner.
