Double LP in a Gatefold Jacket With Lyric Inner Sleeves and a Download

Sub Pop put Whiskey for the Holy Ghost out on its own as a two-record set on October 7, 2016, spreading the album across four sides. The jacket is a gatefold with embossed front lettering, the inner sleeves are printed with the lyrics, and a voucher for a FLAC, ALAC or MP3 download is tucked inside. That double-vinyl configuration was first cut for One Way Street, the 2015 box of Lanegan's albums for the label; this is the stand-alone version of it.

The extra sides also restore a song the first vinyl edition left off. The 1994 LP held twelve tracks over two sides and placed "Borracho" at the top of Side B. All thirteen are here, in the same running order as the CD, with "Judas Touch" sitting second from last on Side D.

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost was Mark Lanegan's second solo album and his first since The Winding Sheet in 1990. Sub Pop released it on January 18, 1994. Lanegan wrote every song, and produced and arranged the record with Mike Johnson, who plays electric and acoustic guitar, slide, bass, piano, organ and harmonica on it. The sessions ran through four rooms: Ironwood, Reciprocal Recording and Steve Lawson Studios in Seattle, and Messina Music in New York, where John Agnello mixed. Bob Ludwig mastered the album at Gateway Mastering in Portland, Maine.

Four drummers appear on it: Dan Peters of Mudhoney, whom Sub Pop credits on "Borracho" and "House a Home"; Mark Pickerel, who drummed in Screaming Trees alongside Lanegan; Tad Doyle of TAD; and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Phil Sparks plays upright and bowed bass, Mike Stinette saxophone and David Krueger violin, and Krisha Augerot and Sally Barry sing backing vocals. "House a Home," the video above, was the album's single. Art Chantry designed the sleeve; the back cover and gatefold photographs are Michael Lavine's, with further images by Arthur S. Aubry.
