30th Anniversary Edition Black Vinyl 2LP

This is a new pressing of the 30th anniversary edition of Above that Artist Friendly Media Co. first issued in 2025: two black vinyl LPs in a gatefold jacket. The packaging restores the 1995 artwork, with the original cover, inside gatefold, back photo and center labels. The audio was newly mastered for vinyl, and Levi Seitz cut the lacquers. Unlike the edition's first run, this pressing does not include the 20-page 12x12 booklet.

Alongside the ten songs of the 1995 album, the edition carries five more: "Locomotive," "Black Book of Fear" and "Slip Away," sung by Mark Lanegan; the instrumental "Interlude"; and Layne Staley's vocal on John Lennon's "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier." Mike McCready has said of the reissue, "Playing with Baker, Barrett, Layne, and Mark was a privilege I will always cherish."

Mad Season took shape in 1994. McCready had met bassist John Baker Saunders in rehab in Minneapolis; back in Seattle the two began playing with Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, and McCready asked his friend Staley, of Alice in Chains, to sing. By McCready's account the music was recorded in about seven days at Bad Animals that winter, with Staley taking a few more to finish his vocals. Staley drew the black-and-white cover image himself.

"River of Deceit," whose lyric Staley drew from Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, was the lead single and reached No. 2 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart; its official video is above. In 2019 Rolling Stone placed Above at No. 18 on its list of the 50 greatest grunge albums.
