Blood With Charred Splatter Vinyl, Remastered And Expanded 2LP In A Gatefold Jacket

Machine Head recorded their debut in November 1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, with Colin Richardson producing and the band co-producing. Robb Flynn had left Vio-lence to front it, writing all the lyrics and playing guitar alongside Logan Mader, with Adam Duce on bass and Chris Kontos on drums — the only Machine Head studio album Kontos played on. Vincent Wojno engineered, the record was mixed at Scream Studios, and Eddy Schreyer mastered it at Future Disc. Dave McKean illustrated and designed the sleeve.

Roadrunner released it on August 9, 1994. It shipped more than 400,000 copies worldwide and stood as the label's best-selling debut until Slipknot's first album. It reached No. 25 on the UK Albums Chart and charted in Austria, Germany, Scotland, Sweden and the Netherlands; the BPI certified it gold in 2020, and ARIA had already done so in Australia in 2004.

Several of the songs are tied to specific events. "Davidian," which opens the record, draws on the 1993 Waco siege, and its "Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast" refrain is the line Real Gone Music's own notes single out. "Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies" carries dialogue from the 1992 Los Angeles riots. "Death Church" addresses profiteering from religious soliciting, and "I'm Your God Now" substance abuse. The album takes its title from a line in the breakdown of "Old."

The five bonus tracks are the complete contents of the band's only self-released demo, recorded at The Grill Rec. Studio in Oakland and issued on cassette in 1993. They first reached vinyl in 2020. Real Gone Music describes this edition as "one thundering, furious, glorious assault of an album, to which we've added five bonus demo tracks on this remastered and expanded 2-LP version."
