This is the vinyl edition of Falaw, released by Sahel Sounds in 2019 under catalog number SS-052. The LP comes with full lyric translations printed on a 10-inch square insert, along with a download code.
Luka Productions is the project of Luka Guindo, a producer based in Bamako, Mali, whose musical training began in West African gospel music. Sahel Sounds describes him as one of Bamako's hardest-working producers, making tracks for artists in the city's balani show and hip hop scenes. Falaw followed his 2017 album Fasokan.
For this record Guindo turned to the heritage of Manding music and, rather than sequencing everything on a computer, brought traditional performers into the studio. Griots tell stories over his synth pads and ngoni players solo over sequenced drums, while Guindo himself plays vocals, djembe, synthesizer, guitar and bass across the tracks. The label's notes point to "BBNI" as his version of a melodic Bamako hip hop song and to "Forêt" for its acoustic ngoni and call and response. The songs offer advice on modern living, with lyrics about loss, love and life. Timothy Stollenwerk mastered the album.
Evergreen Vinyl ships records with care and attention to detail, using established carriers and packaging practices designed to protect physical media in transit.
