Hush Records, the Portland label, pressed Pens From Spain on 140-gram vinyl with a lyric insert and a download code. The album was released on September 2, 2016.
Loch Lomond is the Portland ensemble led by singer Ritchie Young; Hush counts more than 75 musicians who have played in it since it formed. Young produced the album with guitarist Jesse Donaldson, and most of it was made at Donaldson's home studio, with further recording at Peter Broderick's Sparkle Studio in Pacific City, Oregon. Broderick adds strings, organ and drum programming and mixed "Shy Dillon." In Hush's account, drum machines and synthesizers returned to the band's sound here after a decade away.
The lineup includes vocalist Brooke Parrott, drummer Ji Tanzer, keyboardist Rebecca Sanborn, bassist Pete Bosack, multi-instrumentalist Julie Bosack and trumpeter John Whaley, with Mark Orton on lap steel and hammered dulcimer. "Nocturnal Me" is an Echo & The Bunnymen song, and "Listen, Lisbon" takes its inspiration from the Kyrie of the Missa Luba. Tony Lash mastered the record.
