This Indie Exclusive edition of Public Dog is pressed on colored vinyl for independent record stores. Tall Texan released the album on July 24, 2026, with all eleven songs on a single LP.
Little Gold is the Athens, Georgia band led by Christian "Smokey" DeRoeck, a founding member of Woods and Menaguar who also plays guitar in Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band. Stereogum described Public Dog as a return to the band's power-pop roots after the country-leaning Wake Up & Die Right in 2020.
Jesse Mangum recorded the album at the Glow in Athens. Tyler Key plays pedal steel, and Julia Barfield sings harmonies throughout and takes the lead on "Mercury," a Kathleen Edwards song. "What You Want" was the first single and the title track, with Barfield, the second; "Pissin'" first came out as a standalone single in 2024.
DeRoeck has explained the title: a public dog is the handicappers' term for an underdog the betting public backs heavily. As he put it, "The rub is that the public dog almost never wins."
Evergreen Vinyl ships records with care and attention to detail, using established carriers and packaging practices designed to protect physical media in transit.
