Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This edition of Party Down belongs to Rhino Reserve, the audiophile vinyl line from Rhino. Its lacquers were cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing's plant in Oxnard, California. Rhino timed the Rhino Reserve edition to Black Music Month, with a June 5, 2026 street date. It is a single 33 1/3 RPM LP carrying the original seven-track running order, four songs on side A and three on side B.

Willie Hale earned the nickname Little Beaver as a child in Forrest City, Arkansas. In 1969 he signed with Cat, an offshoot of Henry Stone's TK Records in Hialeah, Florida, and his guitar became a fixture of TK sessions, Betty Wright's "Clean Up Woman" among them. Party Down, from 1974, was his second album under the Little Beaver name, and its title track climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard R&B chart, the biggest hit of his career.

The players come from the same Florida circle: Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas and Latimore all appear, and Jaco Pastorius plays bass on one track under the credit Nelson "Jocko" Padron. Reviewing it in his Record Guide, Robert Christgau called the album a "dance-groove item."

The record has had a long second life in hip hop. People Under the Stairs built "Suite for Beaver, Part 1" and "Part 2" on their 2002 album O.S.T. from "Get Into the Party Life" and "I Can Dig It Baby," and Jay-Z sampled "Get Into the Party Life" for "Party Life" on American Gangster in 2007.
