Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP in Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Laughin' to Keep from Cryin' belongs to the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series, Universal's run of all-analog reissues drawn from the Verve and Impulse! catalogs, cut from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings in Kansas.

The back cover credits Matthew Lutthans of The Mastering Lab at QRP with mastering the reissue and cutting the lacquers, with Chad Kassem supervising. The jacket is a tip-on gatefold reproducing the mono MG V-8316 sleeve, Verve's "A Panoramic True High Fidelity Record" banner included, with Burt Goldblatt's cover photograph. Universal's JazzEcho store names Stoughton Printing for the jacket and lists a padded inner sleeve.

Norman Granz produced the session in New York in February 1958, just over a year before Young died in March 1959. Two trumpeters share the front line with him, Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, over a rhythm section of Hank Jones on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, George Duvivier on bass and Mickey Sheen on drums. Audiophile Audition's review of this reissue notes that both trumpeters play mostly muted, leaving room for Young.

Side A is where Young picks up the clarinet again, on "Salute to Benny" and the Gershwins' "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Verve's notes describe the opener as a tribute to Benny Goodman, who gave Young his first clarinet, and Scott Yanow's AllMusic review calls the Gershwin solo "one of the highpoints of his career." Side B holds Young's own "Romping," which runs past eleven minutes, followed by "The Gypsy in My Soul" and "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone." The back-cover notes quote Eldridge on Young and set out who takes the first solo on each tune. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings gives the album three and a half stars.
