Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition 180-Gram Stereo LP

This pressing of Lee-Way is part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Edition series. It is a stereo, all-analog reissue that Kevin Gray mastered from the original master tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The jacket keeps the 84034 number on its front and spine, the labels carry the stereo designation BST 84034, and Gray's KPG mark is etched into the runout on both sides.

Morgan had not led a Blue Note date in more than two years when he walked into Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on April 28, 1960. His quintet that day was Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Blakey on drums. Alfred Lion produced and Rudy Van Gelder engineered. Reid Miles designed the cover, Francis Wolff took the photographs and Nat Hentoff wrote the liner notes. The sleeve credits Morgan and Chambers as appearing courtesy of Vee-Jay Records, and Timmons courtesy of Riverside.

The record holds just four pieces across roughly 39 minutes. Cal Massey wrote "These Are Soulful Days" and "Nakatini Suite," McLean brought "Midtown Blues," and Morgan's own "The Lion and the Wolff" is dedicated to the label's founders, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. "Midtown Blues" runs past twelve minutes, which accounts for most of side B.

Blue Note waited about a year to release the session, issuing it as BLP 4034 in May 1961. In his AllMusic review, Scott Yanow called it "essentially hard bop with a strong dose of soul."
