Black Cherry & Lavender Eco Vinyl 2LP, Deluxe Reissue

This deluxe reissue from Jealous Butcher Records (JB077) is a double album on two eco-vinyl discs, one black cherry and one lavender, limited to 500 copies. The first LP is Beasts of Seasons as released in 2009. The second is Shadows on Parade, an all-acoustic recording of the same nine songs in the same order, on vinyl here for the first time.

Beasts of Seasons was Gibson's second album, first issued by Hush Records and produced by Tucker Martine. She divided it into two parts, Communion Songs and Funeral Songs. In the label's notes she explains that the first reaches toward something outside ourselves, a lover or god or family, while the second grapples with being ultimately alone and coming to accept it. On the record the division falls at the side break, with Communion Songs on side A and Funeral Songs on side B.

Rachel Blumberg plays drums, and fellow Oregon songwriters Shelley Short and Laura Veirs sing backing vocals. Eyvind Kang's viola runs through "Where Have All Your Good Words Gone?," and horns and a singing saw carry "Funeral Song." The album opens with "Shadows on Parade," about seven and a half minutes long, which starts in feedback before the acoustic guitar comes in. Writing for NPR, Robin Hilton called the album "nothing short of a masterpiece." The video above, from Gibson's own channel, introduces The First Decade, the series of reissues this pressing belongs to.
