Indie Exclusive Red Smoke Vinyl 2LP

Wildlife on two LPs of red smoke vinyl, pressed for independent record stores. The band's official store lists it as a 2LP, and the jacket sticker on the label's product shot reads Indie Retail Exclusive Red Smoke. The jacket carries the original cover photograph.

Wildlife was La Dispute's second album, released by No Sleep Records on October 4, 2011, and the band's last for the label before it founded its own imprint, Better Living. Six songs were tracked at Drasik Studios in Chicago, the rest at StadiumRed in New York in April 2011, with engineers Andrew Everding and Joseph Pedulla. The band avoided artificial reverb throughout. Pedulla said the aim was to "capture what it would be like for an audience member sitting and listening to a guitar in a room."

The album is framed as a collection of unpublished short stories by a fictional author, punctuated by four monologues: "a Departure," "a Letter," "a Poem" and "a Broken Jar." Vladimir Nabokov's Pale Fire and Lolita are cited as its biggest outside influence. Several of the stories are hard ones, among them "King Park" and "I See Everything," which concerns parents losing their young son to cancer. Wildlife entered the Billboard 200 at No. 135 in its first week and reached No. 6 on the Heatseekers chart. AllMusic's Chrysta Cherrie gave it five stars.
