This single LP of Orion is one of a run of King Buffalo catalog titles issued on vinyl and CD by Deko Music, the label launched in 2018 by the mastering house West West Side Music and distributed in North America by ADA. Orion was the Rochester, New York, trio's debut full-length, following the 2013 Demo. The band first issued it themselves on LP and CD in 2016, with a first vinyl run of 500 hand-numbered copies, while Stickman Records released it in Europe.
King Buffalo wrote and recorded the album at the Main Street Armory in Rochester in 2015. Guitarist and singer Sean McVay, who now goes by Sean Roa, produced, engineered and mixed it; Bernard Matthews of BMAP mastered it for vinyl; and bassist Dan Reynolds made the cover art. The lineup is McVay on guitar, synthesizer and lead vocals, Reynolds on bass and synthesizer, and Scott Donaldson on drums and vocals. Donaldson told The Obelisk that the title track "came together rather easily," built from the slow melodic riff McVay opened with. The Obelisk's JJ Koczan placed Orion at No. 1 on his list of the top 20 debut albums of 2016.
