White On Black & Black On White Vinyl 15th Anniversary Expanded Edition

Real Gone Music's 15th anniversary edition of Vows spreads 18 remastered tracks, more than 80 minutes of music, across two LPs: one pressed in white with black streaks, the other in black with white streaks. The records sit in printed sleeves inside a gatefold jacket. Kimbra programmed and sequenced this running order herself, drawing on the New Zealand, Australian and US/European versions of the album, each of which carried a different track listing.

Vows was Kimbra's debut studio album, released in New Zealand on August 29, 2011 by Warner Bros. Records and in Australia days later. She began writing and recording it in 2008, at home and in studios around Australia after moving from Hamilton to Melbourne. "Settle Down," the lead single, was the earliest song on the record, written when she was 16. Producers across the various editions include François Tétaz, M-Phazes, Greg Kurstin, Mike Elizondo and Keefus Green. Kimbra has named Nina Simone as the inspiration for her reading of "Plain Gold Ring," a George Stone song. The cover's body art and illustrations are by Rhys Mitchell and Raphael Rizzo.

The album opened at No. 3 in New Zealand, peaked at No. 4 in Australia and was certified Platinum in both. A reworked edition with six further songs, mastered by Colin Leonard in Atlanta, reached North America on May 22, 2012 and debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200. Vows holds a Metacritic score of 72, and Rolling Stone's Jody Rosen compared the material to Björk. Six singles came from it, among them "Cameo Lover," winner of the 2011 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition, and "Warrior," recorded with Mark Foster and A-Trak. In the same period Kimbra sang on Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Record of the Year at the 55th Grammy Awards.
