Universal Songs is the first time Kim Carnes's catalog has been gathered into a box set, covering everything she recorded for A&M, EMI America and MCA between 1975 and 1988: ten albums, one per disc, in chronological order, each with its period singles, 12-inch mixes and duets appended. This edition is limited to 1,000 copies and ships with a separate print personally signed by Carnes.

Carnes already had four albums and chart success behind her when "Bette Davis Eyes" arrived in 1981. It spent nine non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year; its album, Mistaken Identity, spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is certified Platinum. "Voyeur" reached No. 29 in 1982; "Crazy In The Night" reached No. 15 in 1985, with its album Barking At Airplanes reaching No. 48. She won a second Grammy in 1984 as a contributor to the Flashdance soundtrack with "I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is," which later appeared on Cafe Racers, whose single "Invisible Hands" drew another nomination.

The set runs to ten discs in a rigid slipcase, each in a top-opening digisleeve reproducing the original album artwork, with a 24-page booklet carrying a foreword by Carnes and an essay by Christian John Wikane. Compiled with her full cooperation, it collects a number of 12-inch dance mixes making their first appearance on CD, her duets with Barbra Streisand and Kenny Rogers, and the three songs recorded for 1993's Gypsy Honeymoon.
