M. Blanc Translucent White Vinyl 2LP In Uncoated Gatefold Sleeve

This is the M. Blanc edition of The Universe Smiles Upon You ii: two LPs pressed on translucent white vinyl, sold by the band's own store and by Dead Oceans' Secretly Store alongside a black M. Noir pressing and a CD. The ten tracks are spread across four sides, three-two-three-two, and the discs ride in a gatefold jacket with an uncoated reverse-board finish for a matte, tactile feel. A printed inner sleeve carries photographs from the recording sessions and an interview about how the record was made. Rough Trade credits the new cover to Samuel Muir, the artist behind the original 2015 sleeve, reinterpreting his own design, with gatefold photography by Jackie Lee Young.

The record is a full re-recording of Khruangbin's 2015 debut, cut in January 2025 in the barn on a cattle farm Mark Speer's parents bought in the 1980s, midway between Houston and Austin, on the tenth anniversary of the original sessions. Dead Oceans notes that the first version was made there for $1,500, after Speer and Laura Lee cleared out a nest of bees by playing bass and crashing cymbals. The new set is resequenced as well as replayed: "Bin Bin ii," a bonus track in 2015, now sits near the middle of the album.

This time the band ripped out the barn's old plywood dance floor, rented a new one, and brought silent space heaters and hand warmers for the cold. The seven-minute "Two Fish and an Elephant ii" was recorded on the first day, and an eastern meadowlark singing outside the barn can be heard early in "August Twelve ii." Speer leaned on acoustic guitar and fitted instruments with contact microphones, beside Lee's hollow-body Hofner bass and DJ Johnson's brushed drums. "White Gloves ii" came together once Johnson suggested treating it as country disco.

The album's credits list Khruangbin and their longtime Houston engineer Steve Christensen as producers, with mastering by Chris Longwood and pedal steel, synthesizer and acoustic guitar from Will Van Horn. It follows A La Sala (2024), the album that preceded the trio's Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Dead Oceans issued it digitally in November 2025, with the vinyl street date of December 5, 2025.
