Limited Edition Blue Marble Vinyl

Jackpot Records' pressing of The Acid Test on blue marble vinyl is limited to 1,000 copies, catalog number JPR042. Lacquers were cut at Plush Vinyl and the record was pressed by Rainbo Records, with etched runouts. The jacket reproduces the 1966 collage cover, including a small photograph of Jerry Garcia, Kesey and Pigpen and a San Francisco Chronicle item by Herb Caen announcing the album at $5.95. The disc carries pink center labels.

The recording was made at Sound City Recorders in San Francisco with Ken Kesey, Ken Babbs, members of the Merry Pranksters and the Grateful Dead. In his memoir Searching for the Sound, Phil Lesh places the session the weekend after the January 1966 Trips Festival, just before Kesey left for Mexico. Jackpot's notes describe a studio staging of the 1965-66 Bay Area Acid Tests: ad-libbed poetry, fractured harmonica solos and tape loops, with the Dead in the background.

Sound City issued the album itself in March 1966, on its own label and with no catalog number. The Acid Tests were the parties Kesey and the Pranksters staged across 1965 and 1966 with the Grateful Dead as house band, later chronicled in Tom Wolfe's 1968 book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Kesey had published One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1962.
