Apricot Color Wax Vinyl LP In Expanded Gatefold

Light In The Attic's 2026 edition of In My Own Time is pressed on apricot color wax vinyl at Optimal, under catalog number LITA 200. As on the label's 8-track, the LP carries tracks one through ten, the album as Dalton released it; the label's digital release carries the expanded program of nineteen tracks. The expanded gatefold holds a 20-page booklet of rare photographs, with liner notes by Lenny Kaye and contributions from Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart.

In those notes Kaye hears in Dalton "the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, the immersion of Nina Simone, the Appalachian keen of Jean Ritchie." Raised in Oklahoma, she played a long-necked banjo and a 12-string guitar and became a regular of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960s, singing traditional songs, blues standards and the work of contemporaries such as Tim Hardin and Fred Neil.

Dalton was wary when Michael Lang asked her to record a follow-up to her 1969 debut for his new label, and the label's account is that the album had to be made on her terms. Harvey Brooks, who produced, told Kaye: "I left the decisions to her, to determine the tempo, feel. She was very quiet, and I brought all of it to her; if she needed more, I'd present options." Next to her first LP, the arrangements are fuller, with a group of studio players behind her.

Light In The Attic's notes list Lucinda Williams, Joanna Newsom, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett and Adele among the artists who have named Dalton as an influence. In the documentary Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, Nick Cave describes "a sort of demand made upon the listener. Whether you like it or not, you have to enter her world."
