CD in Tri-Fold Digisleeve With Fold-Out Poster

This is the American compact disc of Graduation, issued by Roc-A-Fella Records on September 11, 2007 under catalog number B0009541-02. Rather than a jewel case, the disc comes in a tri-fold card digisleeve with a fold-out poster tucked inside, and the front carries the Parental Advisory logo of the explicit version. Takashi Murakami designed the interior artwork, and Kanye West's mascot of the time, Dropout Bear, appears on the cover in a new cartoon form.

Graduation is West's third studio album, released through Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella, and the third in the education-themed run that began with The College Dropout and Late Registration. After a year opening for U2 on the Vertigo Tour, West set out to write songs built for stadiums, layering synthesizers over his production and drawing on house music, the sound of his Chicago hometown, alongside indie and arena rock. He cut the skits that filled his first two records and kept the album to thirteen songs.

The samples reach well past soul: Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" drives "Stronger," Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T." sits under "Good Life," and Elton John, Steely Dan, Labi Siffre and Can are all drawn on elsewhere. Guests are kept mostly to hooks. T-Pain sings on "Good Life," Dwele, Mos Def and DJ Premier appear on individual tracks, and Lil Wayne's verse on "Barry Bonds" is the album's only guest rap. Chris Martin of Coldplay sings on "Homecoming," a reworking of a demo West first recorded in 2001 as "Home (Windy)." Jon Brion plays keyboards on "I Wonder," and DJ Toomp is among the producers working alongside West.

The album shared its street date with 50 Cent's Curtis and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with more than 957,000 copies sold in its first week. "Stronger" topped the Billboard Hot 100, the RIAA has certified the album eight times platinum, and it won West his third Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Rolling Stone later placed it on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
