Black Vinyl

The Gem is Julia Jacklin's fourth studio album and her first release for 4AD. She produced it with Robert Muinos and cut it entirely in Melbourne, which she had not done on a record before.

It is named after the room it was made above. The Gem is a small pub on a back street in Collingwood, where bands push the dining tables aside and set up in the corner, and Muinos owns Rat Shack studios on the floor above it. The sessions ran in converted hotel accommodation up there, with Jacob Diamond on guitar, Mimi Gilbert on bass and Jess Elwood on drums. People were living in the building, so nothing could be tracked late at night, and the rooms took in whatever was going on around them: the hairdresser and the tattoo parlor next door, the kitchen, the bands playing below. Jacklin and the band played two unannounced shows downstairs to try the songs out before recording them.

This is the standard black pressing. One LP in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve, the ten titles set out across the top of the front cover. The A side ends on "Angel Vision" and the record turns over for "Real Life."
