Black Vinyl LP

This is the regular black vinyl edition of Julia Holter's score for Never Rarely Sometimes Always, issued by Real Gone Music in 2024 under catalog number RGM 1742. Real Gone's notes say the score had never been released in any physical format before, and that the label put it out with Holter's full consent and cooperation. Alongside this black pressing, the label sold a hand-numbered orange with black swirl variant through its own webstore only.

The record comes in a single jacket with a rice paper inner sleeve from Gotta Groove Records, and its runouts are etched RGM-1742-A and RGM-1742-B with the Well Made Music mark. The performer credits appear only on a sticker on the shrinkwrap. David Ives mastered the LP and Kenny Gilmore mixed it. Thirteen cues are split nine to side one and four to side two, closing on two demos: the title piece and "Song for Autumn."

Holter plays synth, piano and cello and sings on the score. Christin Hablewitz joins her on B-flat and bass clarinet, Christopher Votek on cello and Sharon Cheslow on electronics.

Eliza Hittman wrote and directed the film, which follows a pregnant Pennsylvania teenager and her cousin as they travel to New York City to seek an abortion. Sidney Flanigan made her acting debut in the lead role, with Talia Ryder alongside her and singer Sharon Van Etten as her mother. The film premiered at Sundance in January 2020 and went on to win the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival.

Back Lot Music, a division of Universal Studios Music, first released the soundtrack digitally on March 13, 2020, the day the film opened in US theaters. Holter wrote it in the years between her 2018 double album Aviary and Something in the Room She Moves, which Domino released in 2024.
