Indie Exclusive Black Smoke Vinyl

This pressing is the Dead Currencies reissue of Black Paladins, catalog DC0017, cut from the original Black Saint vinyl masters and pressed on clear "Black Smoke" color vinyl. Each copy is hand-packaged and numbered by the label, with updated album art, special inserts and a silver metallic screen-printed spine wrap that carries the credits and the side-by-side running order.

Joseph Jarman and Famoudou Don Moye, bandmates in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, recorded the session on December 19 and 20, 1979 at Barigozzi Studio in Milan, joined by the South African bassist Johnny Dyani, who also plays piano and sings. Jarman moves between sopranino, tenor and baritone saxophones, bass clarinet, flutes and conch shell horn; Moye works trap drums, congas, bendir, shekere and bird calls. Giovanni Bonandrini produced it for Black Saint, with Giancarlo Barigozzi engineering.

The title track sets Henry Dumas's poem "Saba: Black Paladins," which Jarman recites. Dead Currencies' notes tie the session to Dumas's killing in a Harlem subway station by a New York City transit officer, a decade before the recording.

The writing is shared around the trio and beyond it: Dyani wrote "Mama Marimba," Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre wrote "Humility in the Light of the Creator," Moye wrote "Ode to Wilbur Ware," and Jarman wrote the other three. AllMusic, quoted by the label, called the record "the Jarman/Moye duo's most successful effort." Moye, who joined the Art Ensemble in Paris at the turn of the 1970s, calls his own approach to the drums "Sun Percussion."
