Gold & Black Marble Vinyl, Record Store Day 2022 Exclusive

The Land of Heroes had never been issued on vinyl until this pressing, a Record Store Day exclusive released on April 23, 2022 and limited to 2,500 copies. The record is pressed on marbled gold and black vinyl. Its OBI strip calls it a Collector's Edition and a one-time pressing, and the package adds a printed inner sleeve. The OBI spine and the jacket carry Culture Factory's catalog number, CFU01223, while the back cover credits the copyright to Jorma Kaukonen and Fur Peace Ranch, the guitar camp and studio he runs with his wife Vanessa in the hills of southeast Ohio.

Relix Records first released the album on CD in 1995. It was Kaukonen's first new solo studio record since the mid-1980s. Michael Falzarano, who had joined Hot Tuna by then, is credited as producer, co-wrote several of the songs and plays rhythm guitar and mandolin. Kaukonen handles guitars, dobro, lap steel and lead vocals, Fred Bogert adds bass, keyboards and vocals, and Catheryn Craig sings.

The program sets Kaukonen originals beside two songs by the Rev. Gary Davis, "Banks of the River" and "Have More Faith in Jesus." Davis's music has stayed central to Kaukonen's repertoire since a friend at Antioch College introduced him to it. The traditional "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and Falzarano's "It's a God Almighty World" and "Judge, I'm Not Sorry" round out the outside material. "Trial by Fire" is a Kaukonen song he first brought to Jefferson Airplane and still plays.

Kaukonen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Jefferson Airplane, and Rolling Stone placed him at No. 54 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists.
