Rhino High Fidelity 180-Gram Vinyl LP, Numbered Edition Of 5,000

This is Court and Spark in Rhino High Fidelity, catalog number RHF1 1001, limited to 5,000 numbered copies. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, and Optimal Media pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. It comes in an embossed, heavyweight glossy tip-on gatefold jacket with an obi strip, and an insert carries a new question-and-answer with Mitchell conducted by Patrick Milligan, with photographs by Joel Bernstein.

Court and Spark is Mitchell's sixth studio album, released by Asylum on January 17, 1974. She produced it herself at A&M Studios in Hollywood in 1973, with Henry Lewy and Ellis Sorkin engineering, and painted the cover. Rhino's notes describe the record as her move from folk toward a jazz-inflected pop sound, made with the fusion group the L.A. Express: Tom Scott on woodwinds and reeds, Larry Carlton on electric guitar, Joe Sample on electric piano and John Guerin on drums, with Max Bennett and Wilton Felder among the bassists. David Crosby and Graham Nash sing on "Free Man in Paris," where Jose Feliciano plays electric guitar; Robbie Robertson plays guitar on "Raised on Robbery," and Cheech & Chong supply voices on "Twisted," the Annie Ross and Wardell Gray song that is the only one here Mitchell did not write.

The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 in Canada, and has been certified double platinum in the US. "Help Me" went to No. 7 on the Hot 100, her only Billboard top-ten single, and topped the Adult Contemporary chart; Rhino lists "Free Man in Paris" at No. 22. At the 1975 Grammy Awards it was nominated for Album of the Year, and "Down to You," arranged by Mitchell and Tom Scott, won Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll named it the best album of 1974, it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 110 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
