Standard Black Vinyl LP

This is the standard black vinyl edition of One Step From The Blues: a single LP on Stax Records, catalog number CR00803, with six songs on each side and the Stax mark on the jacket and the disc label. A separate blue vinyl edition was issued as a Barnes & Noble exclusive. Stax and Craft Recordings released the compilation on October 25, 2024, ninety years after Taylor's birth in Crawfordsville, Arkansas.

The twelve tracks are drawn from Taylor's Stax years, 1966 to 1973, and Craft's announcement presents the set as the bluesier side of his catalog. Joe McEwen produced the compilation and Joe Tarantino handled the mastering; Craft previewed the release with an all-new remaster of the opening track. The back jacket carries new liner notes by Memphis journalist Andria Lisle, and the cover photograph by Bill Carrier Jr. comes from the Concord API Stax Collection.

Don Davis produced most of the record. The exceptions are "I Had a Dream," Taylor's 1966 debut single for Stax, written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and four sides produced by Al Jackson, among them "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water" and "Somebody's Sleeping In My Bed." "Steal Away," a Jimmy Hughes song, was a 1970 single that reached No. 3 on the R&B chart and No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Cheaper To Keep Her," written by Mack Rice, followed as a single in 1973, and "That's Where It's At" is a song co-written by Sam Cooke.

Cooke runs through Taylor's story. Taylor sang gospel with the Highway Q.C.'s and replaced Cooke in the Soul Stirrers in 1957, before moving to Stax in 1966, where the label billed him as "The Philosopher of Soul." Over his career he received three Grammy nominations and the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award, and he was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2022.
