Limited Edition Red Vinyl LP, 140 Gram, Gatefold

Elemental Music's reissue presses John Lee Hooker's 1966 Impulse Records album on 140-gram red vinyl, a limited edition housed in a gatefold jacket. Front and back covers keep the original spelling, It Serve You Right To Suffer, the title some later reissues changed to It Serves You Right To Suffer. The back cover credits the original Impulse issue, AS-9103, licensed from Universal Music Enterprises; the LP was manufactured in the US by Anagram Music, Elemental's American arm, with Jordi Soley producing the reissue for release.

Hooker cut the session in New York on November 23, 1965, and Impulse released it the following year through its short-lived folk division, promoted with a slogan borrowed from the label's jazz campaign. Signed through Impulse's parent company ABC Records, it is the only album he made for the jazz label. Producer Bob Thiele surrounded him with players from the jazz world: Barry Galbraith on second guitar, Milt Hinton on bass and Panama Francis on drums, with William Wells adding trombone on "Money."

The program mixes new songs with re-workings of material Hooker had recorded before, and closes side two with a version of "Money (That's What I Want)," the Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford song that gave Barrett Strong a Motown hit in 1959. Bob Arnold engineered the date. Ray Ross took the cover photograph, Robert Flynn/Viceroy designed the jacket and Stanley Dance wrote the liner notes. In his AllMusic review, Cub Koda held the record up as a model of how a band should back Hooker.
