3LP Box Set On 180g Black Vinyl With Stoughton Tip-On Jackets And Slipcase

Craft Recordings collects the three albums John Coltrane recorded with trumpeter and flugelhornist Wilbur Harden for Savoy in 1958 into one slipcased set, issued under the Savoy imprint as catalog number CR00951 for Coltrane's centennial. Each album keeps its own LP and its original cover art in a Stoughton tip-on jacket. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original tapes at Cohearent Audio, and the discs are pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at RTI. A booklet carries new liner notes by Syd Schwartz. Mainstream 1958 is presented in mono; Jazz Way Out and Tanganyika Strut are in stereo.

All three sessions took place at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Ozzie Cadena producing. Mainstream 1958, subtitled The East Coast Jazz Scene on its cover, was recorded on March 13, 1958 with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums, and all five of its tracks are Harden compositions. Savoy issued it that May as MG 12127. Trombonist Curtis Fuller joined for the later dates, which produced Jazz Way Out (MG 12131, recorded June 24, 1958) and Tanganyika Strut (MG 12136, recorded May 13 and June 24, 1958). Fuller wrote "Gold Coast" and "Tanganyika Strut"; "Once In A While" is the Michael Edwards and Bud Green standard.

Personnel across the set, as listed on the box: John Coltrane, tenor saxophone; Wilbur Harden, flugelhorn; Curtis Fuller, trombone; Tommy Flanagan and Howard Williams, piano; Doug Watkins and Ali Jackson, bass; Louis Hayes and Art Taylor, drums. Harden, born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1924, had moved to Detroit in 1957 to play in Yusef Lateef's quintet, and also recorded with Coltrane for Prestige in 1958. Health problems ended his career in 1960, and he died in New York in 1969 at the age of 44.
