Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180g Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Crescent belongs to the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series, the reissue program Verve and UMe run with Acoustic Sounds, and it reached stores on January 14, 2022. Ryan K. Smith cut the lacquers at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes, and his "RKS STERLING" mark is scribed in the runout on both sides. Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, with Acoustic Sounds' Chad Kassem supervising production. The record comes in a tip-on gatefold jacket, sleeved in a plain rice paper inner, with the series' color insert. The catalog number is B0033783-01.

Rudy Van Gelder recorded the quartet at his Englewood Cliffs studio over two days, April 27 and June 1, 1964, with Bob Thiele producing. The sessions were recorded in stereo only, and Impulse! issued the album in July 1964 as A-66, in a stereo version and a mono fold-down. This reissue is the stereo program. All five pieces are Coltrane originals, played with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Crescent falls between Coltrane's Sound and A Love Supreme in Coltrane's catalog.

Side two is notable for how little the leader plays on it. Coltrane takes no solo on either track; "Lonnie's Lament" gives its long solo to Garrison's bass, and "The Drum Thing" is an improvised feature for Jones, with tenor and bass appearing only at its start and finish. Garrison's widow later recalled that this album and A Love Supreme were the two records he played most.

Michael Fremer of AnalogPlanet rated this reissue 10 out of 11 for both music and sound. The Absolute Sound scored it 5 out of 5 for music and 4.5 for sonics.
