Monophonic Edition 180-Gram Black Vinyl in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

Impulse! issued this edition for the 60th anniversary of A Love Supreme, putting the album's mono mix back on vinyl for the first time in more than 50 years. Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound mastered it from analog tape, and WRTI reported that his source was a flat copy Rudy Van Gelder made in April 1965 for use in the UK. The record was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, and the runouts on both sides carry Smith's initials beside the Sterling name.

The case for mono comes from the session itself. Smith has said that Van Gelder recorded to a two-track machine but monitored in mono, and that playbacks for the band were heard in mono. The jacket follows suit: the impulse! roundel on the front reads MONO A-77, the catalog number of the original mono issue, and the disc labels carry the same number.

Coltrane recorded the four-part suite in a single session on December 9, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, and Bob Thiele producing. Inside the gatefold, Victor Kalin's illustration of Coltrane sits beside Coltrane's own letter to the listener and the devotional poem that he recites wordlessly on tenor saxophone in "Psalm." The album was nominated for the 1966 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and was added to the National Recording Registry in 2015.
