Indie Exclusive Deep Blue Vinyl LP

This is the independent-retail pressing of Cathedral: a single LP on deep blue vinyl, issued by Sacred Bones under catalog number SBR381 and announced by Carpenter's camp as the indie retail edition. The back of the jacket splits the fourteen tracks seven to a side, and a printed insert rides in the sleeve beside the record. Sacred Bones also issues the album on black vinyl, on an amethyst LP with a 7-inch, and on CD.

Cathedral was written as the score to a graphic novel rather than a film. The book is the first original graphic novel Carpenter has written, co-written with his wife and longtime producing partner Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak, and published by Storm King Comics, the imprint King founded in 2013. The story grew out of a dream Carpenter had in 2024. Each track is matched to a section of the book, and the liner notes carry a prompt for every piece.

The music was written and produced by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies, and the front cover credits all three. Carpenter has described it as "kind of our first heavy metal album." In the label's notes, Davies' guitars lead on "Primeval," "Elevator" and "Lord of the Underground," the Carpenters' synthesizers lead on "Desolation in the Underworld" and "Death of the Mapmaker," and strings join the synths on "Abandoned Cathedral."

The album was released on August 7, 2026, three days after the graphic novel, and runs 45:17. Sacred Bones has released Carpenter's music for more than a decade, through studio albums from Lost Themes (2015) to Lost Themes IV: Noir (2024). Where the Lost Themes records scored imagined films, this one has an actual book to follow. The cover art is by Chris Bilheimer.
