Standard Black Double LP in Gatefold Jacket With Download Card

This is the edition Domino sells as the Standard Double LP: catalog number DS178LP on Double Six, two black vinyl LPs in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves carrying the lyrics and credits. The twelve vinyl tracks run three to a side across four sides, and Side C carries the "Vinyl Mix" of "Shark-Shark."

One track from the album is not on the discs. "All to the Good" is left off every vinyl version and comes instead through the included MP3/WAV download card, together with an alternate mix of "Shark-Shark." The other vinyl editions differ from this one in color and contents: an orange-vinyl pressing, and a Domino Mart pink and mint double LP limited to 1,000 copies that adds a 7-inch of two exclusive tracks, "Beethoven in the Old West" and "News of Nicholas."

POPtical Illusion is Cale's eighteenth studio album, released on June 14, 2024 by Double Six and Domino. Where 2023's MERCY gathered many collaborators across several studios, this one was produced by Cale and his manager and longtime artistic partner Nita Scott in his Los Angeles studio, with Cale playing most of the instruments himself, synthesizers, drums, bass, organ and piano among them. Dustin Boyer recorded the sessions and added guitar; Seven Davis Jr., Mikaelin "Blue" Bluespruce and Justin Raisen shared the mixing; Mike Bozzi mastered it. The collage artwork is by Björn Copeland, with design by Rob Carmichael.

"How We See the Light" led the album out on March 26, 2024 with a video directed by Pepi Ginsberg, the clip embedded above. Two more singles followed: "Shark-Shark" on May 8 with a video by Abigail Portner, and "Davies and Wales" on August 19 with a video by Jethro Waters.
