Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP

Craft Recordings chose Tetragon as the first Top Shelf title of Jazz Dispensary's tenth-anniversary year, and the label notes that the album had not been on vinyl for more than 50 years. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing. It is housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket that Craft says reproduces the original design, Milestone logo included, under catalog number CR00968.

Milestone first issued the album in 1968 as MSP 9017. It was Joe Henderson's seventh album as a leader and his second for Milestone, following The Kicker. Orrin Keepnews produced the sessions at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City, with Elvin Campbell engineering. The sleeve credits two quartets, both anchored by Ron Carter on bass: Don Friedman on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums for the May 16, 1968 date, which supplies all of side one plus "Waltz For Sweetie," and Kenny Barron on piano with Louis Hayes on drums for the September 27, 1967 date.

In place of conventional liner notes, the back cover prints a taped question-and-answer session between Keepnews and Henderson about working with the two groups. It also explains the title, a four-faceted plane figure like the one on the front, and notes that "R. J." is named for one of Carter's young sons. Henderson wrote "The Bead Game" and the title track, Carter contributed "R. J." and "First Trip," and the remaining pieces are Bronislau Kaper's "Invitation," Walter Bishop Jr.'s "Waltz For Sweetie" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." In his AllMusic review, Scott Yanow names the title track, "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Invitation" as the album's highlights.
