180-Gram Black 3LP Deluxe Edition In Triple Gatefold Jacket

This Deluxe Edition from Craft Recordings spreads the Joe Henderson Quintet's September 1970 engagement at the Lighthouse Café across three 180-gram black LPs in a triple gatefold jacket, catalog number CR01030, with the Milestone logo of the original issue on the sleeve. The audio is newly remastered from the original analog tapes, and the set adds five previously unreleased performances: "The Moontrane," "Black Narcissus," "Olive Oil," and alternate takes of "Mode For Joe" and the title track. New liner notes are by the author Eugene Holley Jr.

The first LP holds the original six-track album as Milestone issued it in November 1970. The second gathers "Recorda Me," "A Shade Of Jade," "Isotope," "Invitation" and "Gazelle" from the same nights; four of those were added as bonus tracks to the 2004 At the Lighthouse CD. The third LP is given over to the unreleased material.

The band played the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, California, on September 24, 25 and 26, 1970, with Orrin Keepnews producing. The sleeve credits Lester Koenig of Contemporary Records for the engineering equipment that made the recording possible. Henderson plays tenor saxophone, with Woody Shaw on trumpet and flugelhorn, George Cables on electric and acoustic piano, Ron McClure on bass and electric bass, Lenny White on drums and Tony Waters on conga drums. Keepnews's original notes call it the first album by the group Henderson formed that summer, and Craft notes it stands as this quintet's only release. Alongside Henderson's own pieces the program includes Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," Cedar Walton's "Mode For Joe" and Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa."

It was Henderson's eleventh album, following Power to the People (1969). The Penguin Guide to Jazz calls it "one of the most fondly remembered Henderson albums of the period," and AllMusic's Scott Yanow wrote that the session "features a particularly strong version of the Joe Henderson Quintet."
