Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf Series 180g Black Vinyl LP

Multiple comes back to vinyl here for the first time in more than 50 years, as part of the Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf series from Craft Recordings. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio from the original analog master tapes, keeping the chain all-analog (AAA), and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. It is housed in a tip-on jacket that reproduces the original Milestone artwork, with catalog number CR00845 printed on the front, the back and the center label.

Henderson made the album for Milestone with producer Orrin Keepnews, recording mainly at Mercury Sound Studios in New York on January 30 and 31, 1973, with further sessions that February and April. It first appeared that year as Milestone MSP 9050. Elvin Campbell engineered, and the jacket credits his assistant, Al Vanderbilt, with incidental hand-claps as well.

The band is Larry Willis on electric piano, ring modulator and echoplex, Dave Holland on electric and acoustic bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Arthur Jenkins on conga and percussion. James "Blood" Ulmer plays guitar on "Tress-Cun-Deo-La" only, and John Thomas plays guitars on "Song for Sinners" only. Henderson is on tenor saxophone throughout, and on the opener he is also heard on flutes, soprano saxophone, percussion and voices. He wrote three of the five pieces; DeJohnette contributed "Bwaata" and Holland "Turned Around".

SoundStage! Xperience describes the record as a step toward fusion, built on electric keyboards, multitracking and, on some tracks, electric bass, and reported that its RTI copy of this pressing played flat, quiet and accurately centered. Craft's announcement quotes AllMusic calling Multiple "Henderson's greatest album from this era."
